USM Open 2009

The first ever USM Open was held over the weekend on the 28th and 29th of March 2009. The event was part of Karnival Aman Damai, a charity carnival organised by Desasiswa Aman Damai USM.

A total of 13 teams registered, mostly beginners or players with no tournament record. I felt a bit like bullying people nia, we tournament-experienced players go against them. But come to think of it, it's a good thing too cause we helped raise the standard ma... :)

Msg from our captain to other teams...

On Saturday, we won all games except the last one. Their dorito guy rushed down the tape, i shot him 3 times but didn't realize that none of them broke. After that i went on the focus on the snake side, thinking the dorito side was safe. Bad mistake...

First day nia got bunkered until berdarah liao...

Aiyo.... so sweet....

Second day was better, we won all games. The 2 games we played against team Lion in the semi-finals, we were really close to losing, with the first game down to 1 of us against 2 of them, and the second game down to 1 of us and 3 of them. In the end of the day, our more experienced players managed to turn the tables and triumphed.

The finals against team Inexperienced was a little unbalanced, one of their player went ChengBeng and they had to play with 4 players. Hats off to them for having the sportsmanship to fight till the end albeit being short of one player. Real steady...

"You back me, i will take all the glory..."

"GAME ON!!"

The marshalls there were very very kutlat, really did their job. Although this was just a small-time tourney, they didn't just stand at the side shouting, they really ran to bunkers checking players, laid in the middle of the field with streams of paint coming at them. A big thank you to the men in stripes.

The logo made us look like targets for shooting practice...

Group pic

One thing worth complaining is the safety. The netting was too low, the hostels on both sides of the field were covered in paint. Dangerous acts, like taking off their mask in the field and having no barrel plugs on outside the field, were a common sight. The fact that they are beginners is acceptable, but the authorities should know better and should prevented that from happening. Luckily no mishaps happened...

Zho siao a bit after the tournament

Here are the results,
Champion : S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
1st Runner-up : Inexperienced
2nd Runner-up : Lion

Besides the paintball tournament, there were also other activities at the carnival. Booths selling foods and souvenirs, motorcycle display and stunts, shuffling, Soduku contest, senamrobik, etc, were all held throughout the 3-day event.

Luxe-ury

First, there's something i want to brag about. Guys and gals, you are currently reading my 100th post!! woohoo!! Ok, now to the main point...

The 'most expensive marker' is what it's known, the 'most advanced marker' is what it's claimed, the 'quietest' is what the pro players say, the 'Luxe' is what it's called...

Made by DLX Technologies, manufactured in SmartParts factories, the marker has a lot of similarities with the Shocker. It uses Freak barrels with similar style inserts, similar looking bolt assembly, and similar looking grip. Mike from TechPB calls it "a Shocker on steroids...".

Out of the box, first thing you'll notice is the lack of a macroline. The air is channeled from the tank into the regulator through an internal air chamber. Nothing is exposed, therefore reducing the risk of something breaking due to those crazy dives.

The Luxe board uses voice playback for programming. No more counting LED flashes, no more looking in the manual for mode settings. Everything can be done on the Luxe by pushing a 5-way joystick and listening to what it says...

So nice, unfortunately the MSRP is US$1500, gui ga~.... If i have the money i'd surely go buy one. Napshot Paintball is the authorized Luxe dealer in Malaysia, so go ahead and give them a call...

This video says it all...

Watchmen

"Who will watch the Watchmen..."

...most probably anyone who likes the idea of a superhero-cum-thriller-cum-war-cum-scifi-cum-action-cum-history-cum-fantasy movie. I'm one of those people, lol...

First of all, there's a graphic novel feel to it, the kind you get when you watch '300' or played Max Payne the videogame. The producer has convincingly bring alive an alternate 1980's where the US is in a cold war with the Russians, with both parties possessing nuclear prowess. As the possibility of an all-out nuclear war happening is edging closer and closer, everyone is frantically looking for salvation, including a band of government-banned former superheroes.

There's the crazy don't-give-a-damn Comedian, who does everything his own way; the gadget-loaded Night Owl, who relies on his Batman-style gizmos so much; the mysterious looking and sounding solo-man Rorschach; the not-so-super-looking Silk Specter, who does not have any apparent ability; the superhuman god-like Doctor Manhattan, who always glow in the dark butt naked; and finally the faster-than-a-speeding-bullet Ozymandias, who appears to be the smartest radical alive.

The story was actually an old one, first published as a limited series 12-issue comic book in 1986 by DC Comics. I've never read the original story, but i heard that the movie stays true to the graphic novel of the same name.

Enough of me talking about the movie, go watch it at a cinema near you. I went, i watched, and i like it. Clocking at 2 hours 40 minutes, the show might be a bit too long for some people, but if you enjoyed shows such as NBC's Heroes, Hellboy or Fantastic 4, i super recommend you to go watch it.

Apple goodies!!

Finally, Switchers don't have to see the disappointed faces of those asking for the iphone anymore, because the iphone is now officially available in Malaysia!! You'll be tied to the Maxis network though...

Beside the iphone, now there's a new ipod model!! The new ipod shuffle!! Smaller in size but bigger in memory, it now talks to you!! The tiny size is made possible by shifting the control from the case of the shuffle, to a control piece near the right earbud. And for the first time ever, you can now organise songs into playlists!

Exciting times...

My-NPL 2009 Event 1 Petaling Jaya

It's been almost one month and i still haven't posted about the My-NPL event 1. Haiz, i've been a lazy bum lately, keep postponing stuff...

Here we go...

Friday 13th Feb

At first i thought using my car to drive everyone there, but in the end we got the most luxurious Malaysian car instead...

Stopped in Ipoh to have lunch, Nga Choi Gai!! That was the most delicious tauge i've ever had, and the chicken.... OMG, so soft and tender, be tahan nia cannot stop eating. Have to come again sometime to eat.

Ipoh Nga Choi Gai!! Many celebrities came to this place b4...

Juicy juicy tauge, so fat de...

Reached the field sometime in the late evening. Our hostel is just opposite the field nia, can see the field from out room window. After field-walking and photo taking, stayed back for the captain's meeting (i'm co-captain ma, need to assist the captain...lol).

Captain's meeting, everyone with their sleepy faces...

View from our room

Our room, so messy...

How would i know the meeting would take so long, until 9pm only get to have our dinner at the nearby mamak. The mamak in KL hor, satu macam de. We all take our food liao, want to kira, the guy said go makan first. After we all ate liao he only come and ask, "tadi makan apa?", then only start to kira. How can like this ar? He wouldn't even know if we cheated him...

Saw this McD on the way to mamak, 3-storey leh...

Saturday 14th Feb

This is the day!! Woohoo!! Woke up at 7, prepare to call PB for her special gift!! :) Aiyo, she saw her gift nia become so paiseh to talk on the phone...lol

We D3 players have to finish all 8 prelim games today, so tired nia. We were doing pretty well, all in form liao, and then at the last minute, our last 2 games had to be postponed to the next day cause it was getting dark liao. Haiz...

Gears of war...

Queuing up at the fill station

Preparing to enter the field...

There was one game i remembered really well. We were playing field 3 against team Twister. Off the break i went straight to the bumper and then to the 50 dorito, came out the outside of the dorito and got one guy at the back center can. Once he was out, ran up to the opponent's bumper, bunked out the bumper guy, then proceed straight to the corner can and bunkered another.... WooHoo!! i tell you, felt great man, bunkered two guys in one game!!

Going to bunker that guy...

After bunkering two guys, hang the flag!!

Sunday 15th Feb

The last 2 prelim games was postponed to 2day. Didn't really have much time to prepare as we came back late from having breakfast, had to set everything up in a hurry and went in for the first game. The previous day de form all gone liao la, one game draw one game lost, haiz...

Waiting to go into the field, hugging my precious PMR... :)

The crew helping us with our game plan!?! Are we cheating!?!

Only the top 16 from D3 get to continue playing, and we got 17!! SO CLOSE!!! What to do, we made so many silly silly mistakes. We won a total of 4 games, draw 2 and lost 2.

To the other teams: "You people better watch out, this is my first major tournament nia, still newbie. Next time sure kena you people gai gai!!"

Team portrait!! Now you see our faces...

...now you don't

Snakeman so dedicated nia, sacrificed his Nike boots, played with us until koyak...

We left for Penang around noon. Stopped by Ipoh again for the famous Chicken Curry Bread!!

8th March

Boom!! Suddenly there were so many customers today. Initially i was just going to play in the afternoon nia, but ended up working because there were so many people, so many until our supply of paint ran out...

In the morning alone, there were a group of 40 people from Intima, apparently they were having some camp. And then in the afternoon, Edmond brought his friends, a group of about 8 people. While they were playing, another group of 9 came. This time a boy was having his birthday party, a paintball party!! Walau eh, kids nowadays so rich nia... Then a group of 9 walkons came at around 5pm. We only get to go back at 8 something pm...

This week suddenly so good business. Yesterday about 30 people came, today about 60 people came. If this continues on, sure ho gia liao..... :)

Snakeman jaga field all day and was super exhausted, cannot tahan anymore so didn't join us for training. We only played 3 games. Suddenly so aggressive ki. 1st game was 3on3, i killed 3. 2nd game was 2on3, i killed 0. 3rd game was 3on3 again, i killed 2. Not bad hor, killed 5 in total and only mati once... Ollie Lang in the making!!! Hohohoho..... But really, i played hero and went solo most of the time, and this is not good in paintball, must have teamwork. "It's not about ME, but US", need to remember this...

To sum up today:
  • most customers in a day
  • most people working at the field at one time
  • the latest i went home from the field (8 something at night)
  • least number of games ever played during training
  • first ever outing with PB on a Sunday :)
  • first time eating Shillin :)

Notes to self:
  • Work in a team!!
  • Lower marker when snap-shooting. Realized i got shot so many times in the hopper was because i was holding the marker too high all this while...

Frisbee Day

"Touch Down!!"

Went to the old campus for my first game of Ultimate Frisbee! It has been so long since I was at the old campus, so nostalgic nia...

2 hours b4 the game went to eat BBQ Chicken in Gurney. The super big chicken burger made me so full, 2 hours later went for frisbee still feeling ba ba...

FYI, the game is called Ultimate Frisbee. It's not your usual throw-in-the-park kind of frisbee. It's kinda like american football, 'monkey', and netball combined. Hard to explain, go watch the video to get the picture...

Even they have the superman dive...

Being a first-timer, i threw lousily. Almost every one of my throw would miss its target, unlike the others, can even throw in a curved path, 'banana-ball' style!! Fuyoh, didn't know snakeman can also do 'banana' de...

Captain was suppose to come, but he sent me this msg instead...

...so in the end, I was the only paintballer in the game.

Even this little fella wants to join in the game...
